Fred Eckert, BASF Professional Turf & Ornamentals Senior Sales Specialist for the Southwest and Hawaii

August 01, 2010

Home base:  Manhattan Beach, California

Time with BASF: 5 years

Approach with customers:  “A typical day for me is answering inquiries from distributors and end users. I do ride-alongs with distributor reps where we visit end users and help them address their pest challenges,” said Eckert.

Most interesting aspect of the job:  “In my travels throughout the Southwest and Hawaii, I’ve met a lot of people and learned a lot about agronomics – from turf management in the tropics to turf management in the desert,” said Eckert. “It’s been a big learning process for me over the last five years. Even though I’ve been in the business for 32 years I continue to learn, which is one of the most interesting aspects of the job.”

First job:  “My first real job was working at a Mobil gas station to pump gas. Back in those days, it was full-service, where we would fill your car up with gas, wash your windows, check the fluid in your battery and check your tires,” said Eckert. “But my favorite job was when I was a custodian. I worked my way through college as a custodian during the summer at my local high school. It was good pay and I got to meet some good people.”

When he’s not working you can find Fred:  Staying active by surfing or fishing with friends. Fred is an avid surfer, with more than 35 years of wave experience under his wetsuit. He also likes to camp with his wife of 25 years and three daughters, including twins.

“I like to take my daughters and their friends to San Elijo State Park Beach and we all surf together. We have a big group of friends and we camp,” he said. “I’m the stew master – in charge of making stew for the group one night. We eat, tell stories around the fire, and just generally have fun.”
